Relief From the Pain of Fibromyalgia
While there may not yet be a cure for fibromyalgia, there is plenty of hope for fibromyalgia patients. Learning to live with fibromyalgia can be a challenge, but there are a plethora of techniques for finding fibromyalgia pain relief.
The key is to find a combination of fibromyalgia techniques that work best for you. You may have to experiment, trying different techniques, to determine which best alleviate your fibromyalgia symptoms. But, rest assured, fibromyalgia relief is within your grasp.
Here are some techniques to try for fibromyalgia pain
relief :
Trigger point therapy. Some fibromyalgia patients find that trigger point therapy is an excellent way to find fibromyalgia pain relief. Trigger points are located throughout the body and generally refer pain to other parts of the body. For example, a trigger point in the shoulder triggers pain in the neck and the head.
If you opt for trigger point therapy as a means for finding fibromyalgia pain relief, you’ll need to find a therapist skilled in performing trigger point therapy. The trigger point therapist will gently push down on your trigger points, holding for ten seconds, then she will release.
After the initial ten seconds, the trigger point therapist will then lightly pump up and down on the trigger point for an additional 30 seconds. Trigger point therapy stretches your muscles, leaving you with better flexibility. Many have found that trigger point therapy is an effective technique for ensuring fibromyalgia pain relief.
Physical therapy. Many fibromyalgia patients have found that physical therapy can alleviate some of their symptoms to find fibromyalgia relief. Physical therapy often includes stretching, light exercise, and sometimes water exercise.
Discuss physical therapy, as a possible technique for finding fibromyalgia pain relief, with your doctor, who can write you a prescription for physical therapy. You’ll likely have to attend physical therapy several times a week, at least in the beginning, while continuing your stretching and exercises at home.
Massage therapy. Massage therapy is increasingly becoming a popular way of treating fibromyalgia and finding fibromyalgia pain relief. The massage therapist massages your muscles, using his hands, which in turn increases your flexibility, and the blood’s circulation to the muscles. Massage therapy is credited with curbing both pain and stiffness and in helping fibromyalgia patients sleep better.
Interestingly, the medical community does not know specifically how massage therapy provides pain relief. The prevailing theory, however, is massage therapy provides an increase in production in serotonin, and endorphins, both of which help control pain.
Hydrotherapy. Water is an excellent means of finding fibromyalgia pain relief, and many fibromyalgia patients are turning to hydrotherapy to alleviate their fibromyalgia symptoms. If you undergo hydrotherapy, you may use ice packs or cold or hot compresses to relieve muscle pain; or take a hot bath in a whirlpool.
Hydrotherapy is designed to help your body increase its blood circulation. However, not everyone can partake in hydrotherapy as a means of pain relief. If you’re pregnant, have diabetes, osteoporosis, or a heart condition, you’re advised not to seek hydrotherapy.
Relaxation. Learning to relax is critical in finding fibromyalgia pain relief. Some people relax by meditating, which simply requires you to empty your mind, and focus on your breathing.
Another way to relax, and in turn help you find fibromyalgia pain relief, is to go to a hypnotist. While you may be wary of hypnosis, you’ll discover if you’re open to it, it can help you learn to relax.
Chiropractic care. More and more fibromyalgia patients are discovering that undergoing chiropractic care is an excellent way of finding fibromyalgia pain relief. When you go to the chiropractor, you’ll have an adjustment that will align your skeletal structure.
Additionally, you can expect the chiropractor to stretch and manipulate your muscles. Your chiropractor will tell you how often he wants to see you; you may need to go two or three times a week in the beginning with appointments cutting back as your treatments begin to provide you with more and more fibromyalgia pain relief.
While you are seeking effective techniques for finding pain relief, you should be aware that some techniques – trigger point therapy and chiropractic care, for example – will leave you feeling great immediately after your initial treatments. However, you can expect to feel sore and tired following that initial elation, at least in the beginning of your treatments.
